Hello!
I have an exciting opportunity to design and outfit a mount-making workshop from the ground up for a museum opening in Spring 2026! I'm currently developing a comprehensive purchase list for tools, equipment, and materials, using the IMF Tools and Equipment list PDF as a starting base. However, I wanted to gather insights from experienced mount makers. Are there any essential tools or materials that aren't on the IMF list that you've found invaluable? Or are there any tools you've been dreaming of adding to your workshop? Your expertise would be greatly appreciated!
Amazing!
Since it is from the ground-up, I think you have a great opportunity to outfit a space with safety in mind. A few things to consider that will guide the decision making process on tools:
Is there fume/dust extraction? Can welding/hot work be isolated to protect pedestrians in the same space. Is water available? Can you run compressed air for things like abrasive cabinets or paint booth? I would also add an approved chemical storage cabinet with proper labels for things like adhesives and solvents, and a good supply of PPE so you always feel safe and ready to fabricate!
