Hi All, I've been scouring our sources for some coated picture wire that is twist-able. My requirements are: 1. size 3 2. not braided 3. archival coating (nylon, or?) 4. malleable (twist-able) All of the nylon coated wire I am finding requires the use of crimps, which tells me that it is probably not malleable. Nylon coated seems to always be something like aircraft cable which for this application is not acceptable. Does anyone have a suggestion for me? Thanks!

Ralph, How about getting the wire you need and heat shrinking polyolefin on it? No? Emilio

Hi Emilio,
Thanks for the suggestion! We have constant need for this sort of wire if it exists. Otherwise, yes, I could use some heat shrink. For the sake of convenience, it would be worth finding a ready-made option.

Frameware Inc. sells the product you're looking for. In their catalog it's called Super Softstrand

Hi Frank, Unfortunately their wire is vinyl coated. :-(

Hi Ralph, Yes, Sorry I missed that detail. The shrink tubing is a better solution but you may want to google "nylon spaghetti tubing" and see what comes up. if you find the right diameter for your wire it could save you the step of having to shrink heat. For the wire, McMaster-Carr has a product called Bend and Stay stainless steel wire 304. I haven't used it but it's described as bendable and I assume, twist-able. Frank

I understand not wanting to have vinyl in the exhibit space, but it looks like the only thing used in the industry. My question is whether the works being hung are in an enclosed space that could lead to a buildup of off-gassing products, or if they will be in an open hang situation? Is there actually a danger of damage to the work? Jamie

We like to use it to tie-down objects to exhibit case decks, such as drum stands, guitar stands and such. In these cases the wire is in direct contact with the object. We do so much of this I was trying to figure out a way to make the process more expedient than prepping wire first. It would save a fair bit of time.
