Salary range for Senior Mountmaker begins at $61,000 and the Mountmaker salary range begins at $51,000 and is based on experience, skills and knowledge.
Reporting to the Director of Objects and Textiles Conservation, the Mountmaker/Senior Mountmaker is responsible for the design and fabrication of mounts and associated secondary structures to provide physical support, stability, and security for objects in the permanent collection or on loan for a variety of end uses. Advises on and/or carries out solutions for complex structural mounting projects for oversize and architecturally-embedded objects. Responsible for the operation, maintenance and safety of the mount shop. Actively engaged in fostering a diverse, inclusive, and equitable work environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
● High school diploma or associate’s degree in a relevant trade occupation
● Minimum 10 years experience (or 15 for Sr Mountmaker) in the design and fabrication of mounts and handling art in a major museum setting
● Proven expertise designing mounts for a diverse collection ranging in scale from small jewelry to monumental architectural works
● Strong background in metal fabrication techniques in steel, aluminum and brass with the ability to weld
● Proficient in the use of power and hand tools including power saws, routers, compressors, sanders, drills, grinders, lathes, sandblasting equipment as well as its basic maintenance and repair
● Extensive knowledge of mechanical fasteners and anchoring systems
● Experience with handling, rigging and transport of heavy or oversized art objects and the equipment necessary to do so
● Familiarity with conservation issues related to handling, display, and installation of artwork
● Strong mathematical abilities for accurate measurements and calculations
● Capable of producing templates and drawings that are easy for colleagues in allied departments and at partner institutions to interpret
● Familiarity with chemical hygiene
● Prior experience with mold-making, casting, adhesives, acrylics, and epoxy resins for use in the production of mounts
● Available to travel on behalf of the museum to courier and install special exhibitions at other venues
● Proficient at project prioritization and have demonstrated project management and budget forecasting experience
● Good communication skills and works well as part of a team, often under pressure
● Self-motivated and, at the same time, comfortable working alone
● Able to give directions and oversee others in the execution of large-object handling and mounting
