The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation is seeking applicants for an Exhibit Technician. This is a permanent, full-time position. As a member of the Art Museums’ design and production team the Technician, exercising high levels of skill, will fabricate, finish, install and maintain exhibition environments and display components with extreme precision according to written, drawn and oral specifications.
Qualifications: Experience using commercial woodworking and metalworking power tools, power hand tools, and hand tools usually gained by working in the construction, cabinetmaking or fabrication trades for 2 or more years. Studio art experience may be considered as an alternate experience qualification.
Possesses basic carpentry math skills and experience, including measuring, estimating, marking, squaring, leveling, sawing, drilling, shaping, fastening and finishing, usually gained by working in the construction, cabinetmaking or fabrication trades for 2 or more years. Studio art experience may be considered as an alternate experience qualification.
Ability to work in noisy production shops, paint spray booth, and other production and maintenance areas for prolonged periods while standing, bending, reaching, and wear Personal Protective Equipment (eye protection, hearing protection, dust masks and safety shoes) and other PPE as directed.
Ability to work as part of a team or individually, with limited supervision and meet deadlines, follow instructions, and adapt to changing priorities and work non-standard hours, including overtime, early mornings, evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.
Proficient in English, spoken and written, generally gained through a high-school education or GED, to comprehend construction drawings, field notes, MSDS documents, and tool and equipment operators’ safety manuals and procedures.
Have a valid driver’s license and be able to lift and carry 50 pounds, use freight elevators, walk up and down stairs, work on ladders, scaffolds, aerial work platforms and dock levelers.
Preferred qualifications: Previous museum exhibition production experience. 2 years’ experience in a commercial exhibition production shop. 2 years’ experience working with standard metalsmith fabrication processes for aluminum, brass and/or steel, working with plate, rod, tube, angle and square stock. Experience working with and assembling low-voltage LED lighting components, AV components and controls inside cabinets and display cases is a plus.
